If you’ve missed European travel during lockdown, AmaWaterways’ new offering is likely to pique your interest. The luxury river cruise line is offering a Seven River Journey Through Europe itinerary—which is being billed as the longest-ever river cruise in history.

Scheduled to set sail on June 1, 2023, this unique 46-night voyage will carry 144 guests through 14 different countries: France, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Romania.

Most river cruises offer 7-night itineraries, often with options for 4-night, pre- and post-cruise land extensions. AmaWaterways line has taken the bold step of increasing the length of many of its 2022 and 2023 sailings to meet pent-up demand.

“The interest we have already seen for the Seven River Journey is truly astounding, and I am confident that this is just the start of AmaWaterways offering longer, more immersive journeys based on the positive response from our guests and travel advisor partners,” comments Rudi Schreiner, AmaWaterways President and Co-Founder.

The voyage will stop at iconic cities along the rivers as well as off-the-beaten-path, fairytale towns and villages. Guests will savor regional foods and wines (both on board and ashore), and be able to experience different cultures, traditions, architecture, landscapes and languages.

Among a choice of 130 complimentary shore excursions are visits to 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Several other trip highlights include sailing through Paris on the Seine, visiting the history D-Day beaches of Normandy, and visiting Lahneck Castle in Germany.

Active travelers will be able to choose from a wide range of outdoor biking and hiking options. In addition, an onboard Wellness Host will offer core strengthening, stretching and yoga classes.

Guests will sail on four elegantly appointed, right-sized vessels, each one on different specified rivers (the cruise line currently has 25 ships in its modern fleet). AmaLyra will sail the Seine River, AmaKristina will sail the Saône and Rhône rivers, AmaPrima will sail the Rhine, Moselle and Main rivers and AmaVerde will sail the Danube River. Transitions will be seamless with one dedicated Cruise Manager throughout the entire journey.

Over the past decade, river cruises have become increasingly popular with travelers because of their comfort, convenience and mostly-inclusive pricing. Cruise lines oversee all logistics including accommodations, meals, tours, entertainment, baggage handling and local transportation. On this one-of-a-kind cruise, the line will arrange seamless luggage transfers between ships, and assure that each ship is ready to go once guests arrive at the port.

In its 2020 Editors Picks Awards, Cruise Critic’s international team of editors named AmaWaterways “Best River Cruise Line,” citing its “comfortable ships, highlighted by friendly service and a wide range of activities.” The family-owned company has been in operation for 18 year

“It’s been a very challenging year and people are eager to get back to doing things they love with people they love and traveling is very high on that list,” says Kristin Karst, Executive Vice President and Co-Founder. “They are looking for once-in-a-lifetime experiences that will make up for this past year’s missed experiences. We have seen an increase in demand for longer, more immersive journeys as guests look for vacations that will allow them to slow down and really embrace the destinations they are visiting,” she adds.

As AmaWaterways prepares its ships and crew for a return to the rivers, it continues to monitor constantly evolving local and international protocols regarding safe travel. AmaWaterways is the only US-based river cruise company to have successfully completed a four-month European sailing season during 2020 with enhanced health and safety protocols including temperature checks at embarkation, face coverings when moving through public spaces and cleaning and disinfecting measures.
